GIS Research Analyst II, Urban Mobility

Job Summary

In this role, you will provide technical expertise, research and administrative support to the WRI Africa Cities Program including support in the scaling of transit mapping in African cities for improved and integrated transport planning.

Your responsibilities will range from conducting research or project support as needed and as time permits. You will have the opportunity to connect with sustainable mobility and urban development experts and engage with experts and colleagues around the world.

Job Responsibilities
Research & Knowledge

  • Provide research on urban mobility, particularly with public transport, data collection and mapping of public transport, and integrated public transport
  • Provide technical support to city governments’, local partners including academic institutions and mapping groups on the creation/maintenance of public transport data in Ethiopia, with potential for other regional work
  • Provide GIS analysis to the local and global teams regarding urban mobility and development
  • Develop concepts and plans for integrated transport systems in Ethiopia, with potential for other regional work
  • Develop with colleagues, and apply quantitative and qualitative transport and urban planning research methodologies
  • Support the development of knowledge products and tools to advance sustainable urban mobility and development
  • Conduct desktop or spot research on selected issues as the arise

Project Management Support

  • Coordinate of urban mobility projects in African Cities particularly in Ethiopia to ensure consistency and high-quality deliverable
  • Support in organizing internal and external conferences, meetings, training events and other activities
  • Support the maintenance of shared datasets and others tools/information
  • Support on reporting, and budgeting, as needed with the WRI Global team, partners and funders
  • Report weekly or bi-weekly on progress of projects to WRI Africa Cities Program Manager and Project Coordinator


  • Provide content for WRI communications activities, including blogs, newsletters and the WRI Africa website
  • Support development of reports to city governments, funders and others on WRI activities
  • Prepare presentations and written and graphic content to presentations and reports

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field such as GIS, geomatics, geography, environmental science, sustainable development, transport or city planning
  • Minimum two years of experience working with GIS, preferably in urban planning and transit mapping with knowledge of GTFS (General Transit Feed Specification) databases; tool development; accessibility analysis and transport planning in African cities
  • Fluency in written and verbal English; additional preference for fluency in Amharic or other local dialects 
  • Demonstrable previous work experience and enthusiasm regarding sustainable urban mobility – public transport and innovation on these issues
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams, juggle multiple priorities and work under tight deadlines
  • Detail-oriented, organized and independent thinker
  • Clear and effective communication skills
