Quality Control Officer

Bole, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Enveritas

Position: Quality Control Officer

Duration: 4.5 months between September 2020 & January 2021 to start - then likelihood of long term employment

Location: Based in Addis Ababa with some travel required to coffee regions (Jimma, Sidama, Yirgachefe)

Enveritas is a start-up non-profit that offers a new model of verifying sustainability in the coffee and cocoa sector. It was founded in late 2016 and is headquartered in New York. We have a diverse, global team with diverse backgrounds in sustainable agriculture, management consulting, banking, technology, data science, and public policy. We began our work in Ethiopia in 2017, and since then have expanded our operations to 10 coffee producing countries.

Position Description

Enveritas is looking for a high potential Data Quality officer to support our fieldwork. The position is based in Addis Ababa with travel to major coffee regions. While the initial role will only last for ~4 months, Enveritas is looking to expand in Ethiopia and strong performance is likely to lead to long-term employment.

The Quality Control Officer will manage and analyze survey data to support field teams for their daily Quality Control sessions. The QCO will also perform daily data analyses to monitor the quality of surveys and help manage and coordinate field team logistics. In addition, the QCO will support training sessions to field coordinators and enumerators, which requires an intimate knowledge of the content of Enveritas’ coffee survey and survey tools. This is an entry level role, but we are looking for a profile with very strong potential, that can take on increasing responsibility, run advanced analyses while keeping focus on key questions and not losing sight of the big picture.

Enveritas will invest heavily in your growth and success. We recognize that we need to attract and retain exceptional talent to fulfill our vision of reaching 100% of the world’s coffee farmers. We offer a fun, open, and agile work environment. You will report to a small team of international and local staff and have the backing of a global team with deep experience in sustainability, technology, operations and stakeholder management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Generate daily quality control reports from survey data by running analyses using Looker
  • Monitor quality of data collected on a daily basis and report results to project managers
  • Identify survey or logistical issues during survey collection and brainstorm ways to solve them
  • Take part in the coordination of the work of field survey teams alongside the country project manager
  • Follow up daily with supervisors to correct rejected surveys, solve issues with enumerators, and follow up on questions from team reports
  • Prepare and share daily and weekly statistics on the progress of data collection
  • Test surveys and conduct interviews using mobile phones as needed
  • Conduct research related to coffee in Ethiopia
  • Translate English materials into Amharic and/or Afan Oromo
  • Other data or logistics related tasks as needed

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or business. Top grades required
  • 1-2 years of experience in managing or conducting quantitative and qualitative research (at Uni or post Uni). Strong data quality management knowledge is highly desirable
  • Good data analytics skills or high ability to learn fast – especially Excel. Some experience with analytics software is ideal but not required (Looker, Tableau, R, Python, …)
  • Willingness to occasionally work in rural areas and willingness to work longer-than-usual days including Saturdays during the survey period (October – January) as required to support the field teams
  • Quick learner (i.e. need to learn our internal data analysis tools and rapidly produce impactful results)
  • Excellent verbal and written proficiency in English and Amharic. Afan Oromo, Sidamo or Gedeo languages a plus.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and an effective team-player
  • Experience with coffee farming advantageous but not required
  • Positive attitude and integrity

Please send your CV and cover letter explaining why you are qualified for the position to Applications considered on a rolling basis
