Sustainability Manager


This role will develop and oversee social and environmental sustainability performance of Hop Lun Ethiopia. The successful candidate will work closely with all internal stakeholders to ensure social and environmental compliance, uphold Hop Lun policies and standards, drive various sustainability initiatives and track performance. He or she will act as the key point of contact for Hop Lun’s local clients and other parties to share timely reporting on progress, evaluate findings, develop corrective and preventative action plans and follow up to secure that findings are closed.



  • Work with internal departments to ensure compliance with Hop Lun’s corporate code of conduct and all relevant local laws and regulations
  • Translate and localize Hop Lun’s code of conduct and other policies
  • Maintain a track record of all certificates, permits and approvals needed to operate as a business and ensure these are renewed on time
  • Book, prepare for, assist and follow up audits and assessments
  • Act as key contact point for Hop Lun’s clients in Ethiopia for all sustainability-related matters
  • Arrange regular trainings on Hop Lun sustainability standards and best practices
  • Plan for, conduct and follow up on fire and emergency drills as relevant
  • Track social and environmental sustainability goals and KPIs, evaluate performance and support continuous improvement  
  • Develop and support local sustainability initiatives that positively impact people and planet
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual performance reports for various internal and external audiences
  • Review compliance audit reports, evaluate findings, questions and action plans 
  • Build an internal controls system to ensure risks / issues are addressed timely and progress reported regularly
  • Develop a mechanism to escalate any serious or zero tolerance findings
  • Develop a recognition / reward systems to reinforce strong performance
  • Own the relationship with Hop Lun’s clients in Ethiopia for all issues related to social and environmental sustainability; work closely with Hop Lun’s sales team and customers’ sustainability and compliance counterparts
  • Keep track of new customer requirements and updates and work with internal stakeholders to address and adjust practices accordingly



  • Bachelor Degree in CSR, Social or Environmental Sustainability, Human Rights, sustainable manufacturing or similar disciplines
  • 7 years + experience from managing sustainability and compliance within garment factories
  • Experience from working with social audit programs such as SMETA, BSCI and Better Work
  • Understanding of the HIGG reporting platform and experience of environmental performance reporting
  • Strong knowledge of international and local standards, frameworks and regulations related to human rights, labour rights and industrial relations, environmental impact and health & safety 
  • Skilled in collecting and analyzing data and prepare reports on social and environmental sustainability
  • Demonstrated project management experience, with the ability to manage multiple projects and timelines
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal and influencing skills
  • High degree of work ethics and integrity
  • Good at manage conflict and change management
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
  • Frequent travelling is required
  • Fluency in Amharic
