Main purpose of position

ICARDA seeks to hire a dynamic and highly qualified senior economist to lead the Social, Economics and Policy Research (SEPR) team and support ICARDA’s research programs. She/he will analyze polices and institutions related to agricultural and rural transformation, agricultural technology adoption and impact analysis, agricultural trade and markets, access to and ownership of key agricultural resources, agricultural value chain development, climate change and economic development, and gender and social inclusion. She/he will play a lead role in aligning the research focus of ICARDA with the socio-economic development agenda of non-tropical dryland countries. The successful candidate is expected to have a solid background on the theoretical underpinnings of the political economy of development, be conversant with qualitative and quantitative tools and techniques for comprehensive agricultural policy analysis and strategies for effective policy engagement, advocacy, and influence. He/she will have a collaborative and inclusive approach and a track record in effectively leading teams.

Main responsibilities

· Provide strategic, scientific and management leadership to the Social, Economics and Policy Research team within the Resilient Agricultural Livelihoods Systems Program of ICARDA (the current team is made up of 8 scientists);

· Develop, plan and implement the socioeconomic and policy research agenda contributing to the effectiveness and impact of ICARDA’s research;

· Develop, foster and maintain interdisciplinary collaborative approaches within socioeconomic research and across other disciplines;

· Support ICARDA’s research programs in embedding socio-economics and policy into their research;

· Position ICARDA ‘s social, economics and policy research within the international research for development arena to increase awareness of ICARDA’s research and its impact;

· Seek mutually beneficial collaborations with external centers of excellence and world renowned scholars;

· Lead ICARDA’s policy research for generating evidence that supports agricultural and rural transformation through enhanced agricultural technology adoption and impacts, more equitable agricultural trade and markets, achievement of gender equity, improved access to and ownership of key agricultural resources, agricultural value chain development, adaptation to climate change and economic development;

· Lead or oversee impact studies of ICARDA’s research;

· Play a key role in ICARDA’s fund raising efforts, by identifying strategic and innovative research streams, and designing relevant and high-quality projects;

· Develop an effective strategy and mechanisms that are in line with the interests of the regions for evidence-based policy engagement and advocacy with relevant stakeholders including key decision makers in countries of ICARDA’s interest;

· Design and implement capacity development activities on agricultural policy formulation and research;

· Publish research results in international referred (ISI) journals, international fora and in popular media.

Education, qualifications and experience

· PhD in Agricultural Economics or closely related fields

· At least 12 years of experience in conducting research on social, agricultural economics and policy, including experience managing teams;

· A track record in envisaging, designing and implementing effective research programs;

· Proven experience in applied economics of analyzing and formulating policies for agriculture transformations and enhancing rural livelihoods

· Proven track record in fund raising and networking with the wider development community

· Strong publication record in relevant international referred journals

· Knowledge and experience in synthesizing information and communicating with decision making officials and ability to present the key results in concise and authoritative manner

· Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment;

· Demonstrated ability to effectively build, lead and manage diverse teams of talented scientists from different disciplines and cultures;

· Excellent written and spoken English;

· Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively interact and communicate research outputs and impacts with diverse audiences;

· Ability and willingness to travel nationally and internationally as necessary

· Knowledge and understanding of the social, economic and political fabric of the agriculture sector in CWANA region would be an advantage

Terms of appointment, salary and benefits

This is an internationally recruited position for which ICARDA offers an attractive compensation package including a competitive salary, housing allowance, non-contributory retirement plan, medical insurance and leave provisions. All benefits are denominated and paid in US Dollars. The successful candidate will be offered an initial contract of 3 years, renewable subject to satisfactory performance. The first year will be probationary period.

COOPI has been present in Ethiopia since 1994. The recent history of Ethiopia is marked by a great crisis due to drought, internal disorder, illegal migration and refugees. COOPI’s interventions focused in three region of the Country: Afar, Oromia and Somali region that for a has been the scene of armed clashes and particularly hit by periods of severe drought. To allow the management of these activities and to ensure access to basic services for the population, different interventions were carried out, in the field of water-hygiene and food security both on humanitarian and development perspective.

COOPI is now looking for Project Managers in order to strengthen COOPI presence in the country and, in particular, to implement new projects in the field of different donors (ECHO, EU and AICS).

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Project Manager is responsible for the overall development, management and quality of the project.

  • Referring to the Head of Mission, he/she coordinates and directly supervises projects, guaranteeing their correct implementation in conformity with contractual obligations and donors’ procedures, and in line with the COOPI’s procedures and management standards.
  • He/she is responsible for the preparation of projects’ reports and all monitoring documents requested by the coordination.
  • He/she identifies and supervise the financial and economic commitment required for the project implementation. He/she ensures that all administrative documents are transmitted to the Country Coordination.
  • He/she is responsible for the local staff management and training, in his/her area of competence, in close cooperation with the relative functions at Country Coordination level, whose indications he/she follows. He/she participates to the staff evaluation, together with the Head of Mission.
  • He/she guarantees ordinary contacts with operational and institutional interlocutors involved in the implementation of the project.
  • He/she ensures good visibility of the projects’ overall goals, policies and envisaged and/or results achieved as per COOPI and donor communication policies
  • He/she coordinates the elaboration, writing, and necessary documents preparation for presenting new projects, referring to the Head of Mission.

REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 3 years of relevant field experience in humanitarian programs
  • Proven expertise in value chain and livelihood project implementation and management
  • Previous experience in the country is an asset
  • Sound knowledge of international donors procedures, in particular EU and AICS
  • Strong relational and coordination skills
  • Excellent reporting writing skills
  • Strong staff management skills

The Position: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Officer in livestock Genetics Program to join the African Chicken Genetic Gains (ACGG) team so as to provide technical support to ILRI’s ACGG team. S/he will be responsible for supporting staff and graduate students with high-quality research to move ACGG activities forward. Additionally, this position will play a significant role in the training and organizing of country ACGG teams in Tanzania, Nigeria and Ethiopia.

General: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org

Main Responsibilities:
  • Provides technical support in breeding and genetics data analysis;
  • Reviews literature and legislation relevant to the program;
  • Contributes input to the development of work plans, research questions. project concept notes, and field research guides;
  • Assists in the development and presentation of group trainings in data collection for country ACGG teams in Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Nigeria;
  • Contributes to the writing and editing of ACGG Standard Operating Procedures;
  • Assists in compiling, summarizing, documenting and publishing research data in reports, briefs, journals, periodicals, discussion papers, magazines and newsletters;
  • Contributes towards communicating on-form and on-station research protocols and findings to target audience through workshops, meetings, conferences;
  • Contributes to ILRI efforts in strengthening animal genetic gains programs and improving nutritional security;

Education: BSc degree or MSc degree in Animal Genetics and Breeding or a relevant area
Experience:
  • BSc degree with 5 years’ experience or MSc degree with 3 years experience practical animal breeding and genetics experience working on station and farm experiments, professional certification
  • Familiarity experience with the poultry research and development activities in semi-scavenging production systems in Sub-Saharan African countries
Skills:
  • Demonstrated experience in livestock genetics, breeding, and data analysis;
  • Knowledge in computer applications and softwares for data management and data analyses;
  • Experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods and analyses used in animal genetic improvement programs;
  • Knowledge of the poultry sector and experience in African countries;

Job Summary: The Senior Accountant is to assist Project Management; Field Personnel to ensure invoicing on each project is handled in an accurate, efficient, and professional manner.
