Regional operating context - Sub Saharan Africa (SSA):

By 2050 the population of Sub Saharan Africa will be 2 billion people, with the majority living in an urban environment. The region is predicted to have a middle class the size of Europe. 70% of the population is under the age of 25, and this demographic will grow at 15% year on year for the next 10 years. Generally the region is becoming more politically stable. There are on average 50 elections each year, many of which are more open and transparent than before. The majority of countries in SSA are developing economies. Gender inequality remains and life for women and girls on the continent remains challenging.

Ethiopia is the only indigenous state in Africa to have retained its independence through the colonial era and to the present day. It is a major regional power, the seat of the African Union (AU), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and a leading contributor of personnel to UN peace-keeping operations of a total population of c. 97million (2014 figures), 43% are under the age of 14 years. As of mid-2017, Ethiopia hosts close to one million refugees, the second highest refugee population in Africa, after Uganda.

The economy has seen average year on year growth of 10.8% since the mid-2000s. UK investment has more than doubled in recent years, and the government’s ambitious five year national development and transformation plan presents many opportunities for UK organisations. Access to basic education and health services have improved over recent years, the number of public universities has increased from 10 in the mid-2000s to 35 now, with a further 11 planned to open.

The opportunity:
The Deputy Country director will be responsible for taking the lead in actively securing and managing key partnerships, exploring business development opportunities and income generation aligned to the British Council’s strategy and vision. The post holder will also support the Country Director in the effective running of the Ethiopia directorate, deputising in her/his absence.

The role includes contributing to the design, implementation and evaluation of the country strategy and plans, and ensuring that ambitious plans (including operational, governance, financial and non-financial plans and targets) are met, ensuring full compliance with relevant standards and policies in so doing. See highlights of what we require of the successful candidate:

Supporting the Country Director to

  • Develop and deliver the country strategy, business plans and targets
  • Manage financial and non-financial risk
  • Delivery of change programmes (as agreed with CD and in alignment with regional/corporate plans)

Compliance & risk management

  • Ensure the British Council Ethiopia meets all relevant internal and external compliance requirements, so that the organisation and its entities operate legally, with integrity, and in a way that manages risk effectively.

Operational Management

  • Responsible for operational delivery (with the exception of the Teaching Centre, exams operations and large-scale programmes with separate reporting lines), especially resourcing and finances, making sure expenditure/costs do not exceed income
  • Leading on any efficiency programmes, new delivery models

Business development/pursuit

  • Support non-Teaching and Exams business development and pursuit, working with SBU colleagues

Staff Leadership

  • Line-management of grant-funded programme teams and client/co-funded programme managers as appropriate in line with British Council brand and values. Line management will in particular be in Connecting Classrooms, Arts, Social Enterprise, Higher Education and WV.
  • Coaching and supporting individuals and teams involved in delivering outcomes
  • Modelling appropriate leadership styles and behaviours, ensuring all staff work in alignment with the British Council mission and values
  • Actively supporting equality, diversity and inclusion, working to the British Council’s diversity policy at all times.

Managing Change

  • Identifying what changes in processes, procedures and practices are needed to achieve change and deliver the planned benefits and ensuring that managers have the necessary information to communicate changes and the impact to staff.
  • Working on the ground to meet staff and user groups to discuss change, and encourage and motivate them to embrace the change to realise the benefits.

Role purpose:

This is a 2 years fixed term contract tied to the full implementation of Human resources Information Systems (HRIS) and shared services. The 2 years global change programmes will transform quality and performance of HR by professionalising the function and ensuring strategic alignment with the overall HR Fit for Purpose programme goals. The Post holder will be responsible for conducting day-to-day HR operations effectively to provide proactive HR support across Country. 

Function overview:

The global HR team is undergoing a significant transformation to position it more effectively to support the rapidly changing needs of the British Council.  The HR Analyst reports to HR Business Partner, Ethiopia and will contribute to the successful running of HR as well as providing vital support to all operational team members in Ethiopia. She/he will contribute to the on-going development of British Council, Ethiopia as a high-performing country operation, modelling the values and principles of a collaborative, integrated and mutually supportive team. 

Main Accountabilities: 

1. Employee Relations & Engagement - The post holder will act as first point of contact for British Council staff in the Country providing information to about specific and general HR services, over the phone, by email and in person.

  • Act as a resource about HR policies and procedures, ensuring that this are availed to staff and line managers as required 
  • Communicate Human Resources updates to all staff.
  • Coordinate and prepare HR employee engagement activities as directed by the Management team
  • Implement regional/global projects and activities in coordination with the Management team

  1. HR Self Service -
    He/she will build HR materials and make them available on HR Share Point
  • Update the materials periodically

As the HR Business partner(HRBP) you will be part of the SSA HR busineering strand under the East Africa Custer.The HR Business Partner,Ethiopia reports to the Head of HR Kenya & East Africa. This post is instrumental in ensuring that all HR is well supported and presented, procedures and policies are adhered to and that operational teams are knowledgeable about, and compliant with, the HR embedded within their business as usual processes. 

Purpose of job
This role will support the Head of HR Kenya & East Africa by providing operational HR expertise across the broad spectrum of HR activity, to support efficient and effective business operations. HR Business partner(HRBP) role supports the country leadership team to develop strategies, plans, budgets, projects and timelines to deliver the country people and business plan. 

Main Accountabilities: 

Consultancy and high quality HR service -
 The HR Business partner will deploy a range of HR specialist or bespoke approaches to support the provision of high quality services and advice 

  • Lead and co-ordinate the annual people cycle, for performance management, talent management, succession planning, learning and development etc., engaging and communicating key stakeholders to deliver in line with British Council timelines, policies and processes.
  • Provide HR operations and ER support/advice on all people matters, ensuring high quality service is delivered to maximise performance and minimise risks and costs.

  • Work in partnership with the Head of  Regional Talent &Development, to build people management and coaching capabilities of managers in country via:  Coaching / guiding, advising in the annual HR people cycle, resourcing, Induction, ER, Reward, Performance, Talent & Succession management , Inducting and onboarding new managers and training new country leadership in HR systems and processes as well as providing or sourcing training and development for line managers in country to increase capability. 

Leadership and business partnering - Internal customer focus

  • As a member of the Country Leadership Team, contribute to the delivery of the country plan through the HR strategy, budgets and people plans - sharing expertise and learning and ensuring an integrated approach to delivering high impact HR advice and quality service delivery in country. 
  • Builds an in-depth understanding of the particular operational context, opportunities and challenges facing operations and management, to ensure the development of new policies and practices based on informed business insight and joined-up thinking.
  • Applies advanced HR generalist knowledge to solve a range of complex business issues. Devises non-standard or bespoke analytical approaches to understand complex problems and enable informed business-planning, decision-making and/or the development of new or improved policies and practice
  • Provides expert HR advice, support and challenge to internal customers and other stakeholders to support the development of high quality, effective and continuously improving business practices within their area of expertise, ensuring high quality service is delivered to maximise performance and minimise risks and costs 

Service improvement 

  • Identifies and makes recommendations to HRBP Cluster lead for improvements to ways of working that enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the corporate functional discipline, as well as the operational effectiveness of their internal customers
  • Explains to customers and colleagues the need for compliance with agreed HR corporate and regional procedures. As required, collates compliance data within standard monitoring and reporting systems.
  • Participates as part of a team to support implementation of corporate and/or regional HR change projects (Activities could include: providing technical guidance to less experienced colleagues on new systems/procedures/ways of working; developing or delivering staff training and familiarisation activities; participation in project steering or practice groups etc) 

Line management and functional expertise

  • Provide formal line management to the in-country HR professionals  
  • Provide professional coaching/mentoring/guidance to internal customers and HR colleagues, to manage non-routine HR issues or guidance to implement project and change plans. 
  • Develops peer/personal networks within and outside the British Council to enhance own knowledge and expertise. update knowledge of developments in external policy, practice and regulation

  • Carryout out pest control activities in the warehouse and give feedback  
  • Ensures through inspection that pulses are cleaned on the bases of the quality standard
  • Keeps record of all quality standard set by the Company as well as the certificated number, type of product and the date the sample is given to the quality control unit.
  • Takes a sample from each job order or cleaned pulses for export and submit in packing for their checking of the quality of the finished product.
  • Releases the finished product to be forwarded to port after the sample has been checked (confirmed) to meet the quality standard.
  • Checks personally that the trucks on which finished products export is to be loaded are clean, dry and free from foreign smells; rejects trucks which are found not clean enough for loading the coffee.
  • Review product quality requirements for individual clients to ensure those
    requirements are understood and implemented.
  • Support the development of quality goals and targets as part of the organization’s strategic plan
  • To continuously review quality control processes, procedures and capabilities in order to
    sustain the most cost effective and efficient methods for meeting quality requirements, and making recommendation for improvement as appropriate.

Job Position:      TRAINEE PILOT

Location:              Ethiopian Airlines Head Quarter, Aviation Academy(Recruitment and Placement Office)

Registration Date:            August 07, 2017 – August 11, 2017

Required Qualification;-BSC Degree in Electrical/Electronics /Aeronautical /Mechanical /Civil / Industrial/Chemical/Computer / Software / Electronics and Communication/ /Hardware Engineering/Physics / Mathematics /Statistics / Computer Science /  Information Science/ Information Technology or any Engineering or IT related fields  with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 from Recognized Ethiopian Higher Institutions

    N.B: 1. Age limit: For external applicant 18 - 25 years old

                             For Internal Applicant ≤ 27 years old

  1. Height: Male - Minimum 1.70 Meter

                      Female – Minimum 1.67 Meter

  1. For Applicants from international schools, equivalency certificate must be presented from Higher Education Relevance & Quality Agency.
