The position: The International Centre of Insect Physiology & Ecology (icipe) seeks to hire a Project Coordinator responsible for carrying out and coordinating a range of activities to evaluate the feasibility and impact community-based malaria vector control using a range of interventions to test the feasibility of integrated vector management (IVM) as a pragmatic strategy for sustainable malaria control in Ethiopia. She/he will be a member of icipe Ethiopia office which is located at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

General: The International Centre of Insect Physiology & Ecology (icipe)— African Insect Science for Food and Health - is a centre of research excellence with a mission to alleviate poverty by ensuring food security, improving health, protecting the environment and building the capacity of researchers and communities in low-income countries, through the application of insect sciences. Employing more than 500 national and international staff, icipe is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya with stations in Ethiopia and on the shores of Lake Victoria in western Kenya. icipe has a proud reputation and history of delivering high-quality science that has made crucial contributions to African food and health policy, delivered development outcomes to rural communities, and has been at the forefront of building Africa’s biological research capacity. The Centre’s research activities span the African continent with partnerships linking research organizations, not only across Africa, but also the globe. Job Purpose: The overall purpose of the job is to support icipe’s malaria research programme in its implementation of an integrated vector management (IVM) project in Tolay, Ethiopia. Reporting to the IVM Project Coordinator, the applicant will plan, supervise and evaluate all research and non-research activities aimed at:
  • Optimising an IVM strategy for malaria control involving adult and larval mosquito control;
  • Promoting the adoption and sustainability of IVM at community level;
  • Advocacy of IVM at regional and federal government level.
Main Responsibilities:
  • Closely supervise all project activities currently ongoing to ensure highest quality of data collected. Activities include promotion of long- lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) use, regular larviciding, monitoring of larval and adult mosquito densities, implementing of cross-sectional malaria parasite surveys and educational interventions. Staff supervision includes a project-based social scientist and several field based assistants.
  • Regularly compile Health Centre data on malaria infections and conduct entomological surveillance of malaria vectors (both larval and adult mosquitoes) in the designated sentinel villages to determine the impact of the project interventions.
  • Assist with ongoing efforts to improve linkages between community- based structures, government programs and other stakeholders including organizing of annual IVM capacity-building workshops conducted by icipe in partnership with the Ethiopia IVM Working Group hosted within the Federal Ministry of Health.
  • Develop milestones and timelines.
  • Prepare requisitions and reports on field expenditures.
  • Prepare quarterly technical progress reports and biannual and annual technical reports for submission to the donor.
  • Contribute to data analysis and manuscript preparations.
  • Perform other project management duties as required.
Education: MSc in Medical Entomology, Epidemiology, Public Health or related job-relevant field. A PhD in a relevant field will be beneficial but not essential.
Experience: At least 5 years of relevant working experience which must include working on malaria research and/or control. If less than 5 years working experience, at least 3 years’ experience in leading field-based malaria research involving collecting entomological, parasitological and sociological data, and promoting active community and multi stakeholder participation for malaria control.
Essentials:
  • Documented experience of working with governmental and nongovernmental development organizations in a research capacity or as a facilitator/trainer/manager in public health, preferably malaria.
  • Proven ability to work with communities in rural environment.
  • Training in mobilization of rural communities, other stakeholders and extension personnel; forging linkages between communities and different government and non-governmental partners.
  • Proven aptitude for working in the field.
  • Proven ability in handling quantitative and qualitative data sets.
  • Statistical software applications skills.
  • Computer literate and conversant in Microsoft Office suite.
  • A proven ability to write clear, structured and analytical reports.
  • A proven ability to communicate complex concepts in simple language.
  • A proven ability to work as part of a team.
  • A proven ability to develop milestones and to adhere to timelines.
  • Proven project leadership skills.
Desirables:
  • Knowledge of malaria vectors’ and other mosquitoes’ ecology.
  • Knowledge of current frontline malaria vector control methods.
  • Experience in measuring the effectiveness of malaria control interventions through surveillance and analysis of key entomological and epidemiological outcomes.
  • Experience in working on mosquito larval control and testing of larvicides.
  • Knowledge of the principles of integrated vector management.
  • Knowledge of the Ethiopian health system.
  • Training in epidemiology and control of malaria would be an advantage.
  • A record of relevant research publications in peer reviewed journals would be desirable.

ICT Customer Services Technician

The Position: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit an ICT Customer Services Technician who will be a member of Information and Communication Technology team in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

General: ILRI works with partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm animal alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products, and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases.

Job Purpose:

ICT Customer Services Technicians are responsible for responding to customer requests by diagnosing and resolving problems and for supporting the ongoing technology needs of all employees by providing Level 1 and 2 help desk support. They work with a broad range of infrastructure products and basic networking components.  They provide maintenance and support for moderately to highly complex client products and work on one or more projects concurrently as a team member.

SERVICE DESK:

  • First point of contact and day-to-day technical support to end users;
  • Responds to Level 1 and support requests via multiple sources such as phone and e-mail;
  • Enters call data into the tracking system.
  • Interacts with clients in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Provides user access service.
  • Diagnoses problems by evaluating multiple options.
  • Develops checklists and scripts for resolving routine problems.
  • Escalates problems when necessary.
  • Documents problem status and resolution in tracking log.

PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL MEETINGS:

  • Ensures that audio visual conferencing equipment in the meeting rooms are in good working condition. These are Projectors, Mixers, Screens, Microphones, Speakers, Cameras, Amplifiers, associated desktop computers and laptops in meeting rooms.
  • Setups and operates the audio visual and PA systems as per the different meeting room arrangements upon clients’ request, administer accordingly including recording of meetings as required.
  • Supports virtual meetings and collaboration spaces using available Audio Video Conference facilities like Skype, WebEx, gTalk, Skype for Business, upstream and any others tool available over the internet and telecommunication links. 
  • Gathers feedback on conferencing services quality from participants and opportunities to improve – Share and implement in liaison with other key staff.
  • Develops the annual preventive maintenance schedule for all AV equipment and meeting rooms and handle/facilitate the exercise, provides quarterly reports on maintenance and utilization.
  • Proactively develop contacts with other institutions with similar AV equipment and activities to ensure that the Centre maintains a state of the art audio visual equipment and practices.
  • Conducts regular training and awareness sessions on use of available audio visual equipment and tools.
  • Be available to provide required support for meetings held out of office hours.
  • Provides basic ICT support to meeting participants and escalating to relevant ICT staff tasks that he/she cannot handle.

CLIENT TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT:

  • Coordinates the deployment of new or upgraded images, software and hardware for multiple clients.
  • Configures and installs desktop PCs, peripheral equipment, laptops and other mobile devices.
  •  Follows established procedures for performing configuration changes, updates and upgrades.
  • Performs minor repairs to hardware, software, and peripheral equipment, following design or installation specifications.
  • Provides on-going support of client technology.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT:

  • Monitors and communicates system status.
  • Diagnoses and resolves client workstation and mobile device hardware and software issues.
  • Creates temporary solutions until permanent solutions can be implemented.
  • Assists systems, programming, and vendor professionals, as needed to resolve problems.

SERVICE LEVEL MANAGEMENT:

  • Collaborates in the development of service-level objectives and takes steps to meet or exceed targets.
  • Explains service procedures to clients.
  • Follows up in a timely manner to ensure customer satisfaction.

SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Keeps performance metrics.
  • Identifies recurring and potential problems and notifies team members.
  • Recommends procedures and controls for service improvements.
  • Recommends ideas for improving queue time, abandoned call rates and first contact resolution

SECURITY:

  • Maintains passwords and users credentials to assure systems security and data integrity.
  • Adheres to the integrity of controls, regulations and guidelines.

DOCUMENTATION:

  • Creates, modifies and reviews documentation of issues resolutions.
  • Documents solutions to common problems and responses to frequently asked questions.
  • Creates and submits documented resolution to Knowledge Base.

INVENTORY MANAGEMENT:

  • Maintains IT inventory management for all IT equipment and/or software in accordance with company policy and procedures.

COMMUNICATIONS/CONSULTING:

  • Alerts team members about recurring problems.
  • Communicates updates on issues in a timely manner to ensure client satisfaction and productivity.

BUSINESS CONTINUITY:

  • Communicate suggestions on backup and recovery procedures.

RESEARCH/EVALUATIONS:

  • Makes suggestions for the design of a standard set of integrated products (standard image) by recommending hardware and software products to meet client requirements.
  • Recommends products to clients by understanding needs and referring to corporate standards list.

TESTING:

  • Participates in integration and user acceptance testing.

PROJECT PLANNING:

  • Provides input during project planning and requirements phase.

Academic and professional qualifications:

Education:         

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field. Or equivalent work experience.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of basic to moderately complex hardware and software products and problem solving / diagnostic skills.

Experience:

  • Three years of IT work experience with additional experience on large meeting rooms audio visual systems. Technical training on audio visual system is advantage.
  • Willingness and ability to travel, as necessary. domestically and internationally

Skills:

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Minimum Base Salary:  Birr 12,536 (Negotiable depending on experience, skill and salary history of the candidate)
